Vision of the Mathematics department

Teachers at Cardinal Heenan have developed an inspiring, motivating and coherent mathematics syllabus for the entire ability range. It encourages:

• Sound understanding of concepts.
• Fluency in procedural skill.
• Competency to apply mathematical skills in a range of contexts.
• Confidence in mathematical problem solving.

This vision is achieved by encouraging students, developing their confidence and allowing them to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

Paper 1—non calculator Percentage of total marks 33.3%
Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes

Paper 2—calculator Percentage of total marks 33.3%

Pupils will take three examination papers, all at the same tier. They sit either the Foundation tier (Papers 1, 2 and 3, leading to
Grades 5 -1) or the Higher tier (Papers 1, 2 and 3, leading to Grades 9 - 5). All examinations are at the end of Year 11.



A mix of question styles from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems. The mathematical demand increases as you
progress through the paper. All content can be assessed on any of the three question papers. As such, some questions will
draw together elements of Mathematics from different topic areas.

Applications (Apps) for Mobile Phones

There are also many applications (apps) for mobile phones, including the Collins Revision App and the GCSE exams App (Super
Edition). These may be installed onto smartphones or other tablet devices.
Whichever revision resources you use, make sure that the revision aid is testing the right topics at the right level. If you are
unsure, just contact any teacher in the Mathematics Department. We'll take a look.


Tips for Parents

Opportunities to practice mathematics are everywhere! For example you can encourage your son or daughter to do mental
calculations in everyday situations:

How much will this cost? How much change will I get?

Or you could ask some more open questions to encourage mathematical discussion: I've got four coins in my pocket. How
much do I have?

Try to phrase the questions in several steps, rather than to seek a complete answer straightaway. Don't worry if you don't
know the answer yourself. Simply ask your sons and daughters to explain their working and thinking to you. You may be surprised
how much you both enjoy it!
