Physical Education

In Physical Education we believe that God grants us the abilities to know, to care for and to protect the body that was made in His image. For pupils, this is learned when we promote wellness and model healthy lifestyles by teaching health concepts and physical fitness activities. We believe that Physical Education promotes life-long health based on physical and spiritual fitness. Physical Education contributes to our learning and faith community by:

  • Helping pupils make choices related to fitness, based on the value of life and human dignity
  • Encouraging pupils to value personal and group mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth
  • Promoting among pupils physical fitness for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life
  • Helping pupils to recognise that life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God and that we must take reasonable care of them
  • Enabling pupils to develop respect for each other’s diversified skills

GCSE Physical Education

Throughout the course of study learners are encouraged to develop an awareness of the role of physical education in society and its application to many situations.


Component 01: Physical factors affecting performance
Assessed by a one hour written examination worth 30% of final mark

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Physical training

Component 02: Socio-cultural issues and sports psychology
Assessed by a one hour written examination worth 30% of final mark

  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Sports psychology
  • Health, fitness and well-being

Component 03: Performance in physical education (NEA)
Assessed by Controlled Assessmentworth 30% of final mark

Performance of three activities taken from two approved lists:

  • one from the ‘individual’ list
  • one from the ‘team’ list
  • one other from either list.

Analysing and evaluating Performance (AEP) task based (NEA)
Assessed by Controlled Assessmentworth 10% of final mark

Pupils must use practical examples from physical activities and sports
to show how theory can be applied and to reinforce understanding of their
chosen sporting activity. Pupils are required to demonstrate their ability to
analyse and evaluate their own performance in order to:

  • analyse aspects of personal performance in a practical activity
  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the performance
  • produce an action plan which aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance.

Important Notes

  • This qualification is suitable for learners intending to pursue AS or A levels, Higher Education or any career for which
    an understanding of the human body or human behaviour is desirable.
  • This qualification provides a suitable introduction to further study in social sciences, or as part of a course of general
  • For most pupils performance will be assessed through continual assessment by PE teachers during lessons.
  • Credit can be given for sporting activities carried out, to a high standard, outside school. Coaches would be asked to assess a pupil, based on criteria supplied by the teacher and to provide video evidence of the standards reached.
