As you will appreciate, it is vital that students continue to access their education, from home, when they are isolating. Our remote learning plan
Our remote learning plan has been made with our students and their families in mind and is one that is both comprehensive and flexible. We have followed the guidance set by the Department for Education and believe that this strategy will work best for the children at our school.
- We are continuing to use Google Classrooms as our remote learning platform. Students in Year 10 are familiar with this, as it was the platform used during lockdown.
- Work posted onto Google Classrooms will mirror what would have been taught if your child had been in school and will consist of a variety of resources, depending on the content being delivered.
- Resources will include: PowerPoint presentations, video content, reading materials, assignment briefs, links to appropriate online content, videoed lesson delivery (materials and voiceover)
- We have made the decision to present resources in this way (i.e. so that they can be accessed at any time) as we are aware of the immense pressures that families are under at present and that it may not always be possible for children to undertake all of their work at home during their normal timetabled hours.
- We do expect, however, that students log on to Google Classrooms and complete work, in their books, on a daily basis, and that all tasks are completed to a high standard and evidence submitted where requested. Please contact us if your child is struggling with any of the work that has been set for them.
- Where a child has significant learning needs and has access to a TA in school, a member of the SEND team will be in contact to ensure that work is accessible and to arrange for appropriate resources to be sent home accordingly.
- Pastoral staff are available during your child’s time at home to support with their wellbeing. Teachers will check and mark the work once the student is back in school.
What you’ll need at home
- Students will need a device that can access the internet and on which they can complete their work, such as a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. Please let us know if they do not have access to such a device.
- Students will need their subject exercise books (or paper, if their book is in school) and the usual stationery that they bring to school.
- Students will need a quiet space where they can work without interruption, wherever possible.
If your child does not have any of the above, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can help support you. We are committed to ensuring that our students have everything that they need to study effectively.
What we expect from your child
It is important that your child engages with Home Learning and completes the work set for all subjects. Timetables are contained within students’ planners and provide a guide as to when they should, ideally, be completing their work for particular subjects. We do understand, however, that circumstances may make it unfeasible for this to be followed at all times.
It is important that your child:
- Completes all Home Learning activities fully, utilising the resources that their teachers provide on Google Classrooms.
- Opens their specific ‘Classrooms’ on GC to locate work, as well as checking their ‘To do lists’.
- Engages with pastoral staff during their check-in telephone call so that we are aware of their wellbeing and progress.
- Communicates any difficulties to us as soon as they arise by messaging their teacher directly on Google Classrooms.
What you can do to help
We appreciate that your child learning at home may present some challenges for your family and want to do everything we can to help. We kindly ask for your support so that we can continue to provide high-quality education for your child during this time.
We don’t expect you to watch your child all day, and we wouldn’t expect parents/carers to get involved in remote lessons in place of our teachers. But, it would be really helpful if you can take an active role in your child’s learning by asking them about their day and what work they’ve done.
Our top tips:
- Try to encourage your child to be ready and dressed for the start of the school day, and to keep to their timetable. If it is not possible for them to follow their usual school timetable, it would be helpful if you could assist them in creating and sticking to a regular routine.
- To separate home and school life, have a clear cut-off time.
- Plan breaks and exercise into the day to help keep your child active.
