Debating: Spring Half Term 1 Update

Debating

Our debating society meet every Thursday to discuss a wide variety of contemporary issues. This term, alongside preparing to take part in local and national debating and public speaking competitions, they have discussed the role of the arts in society, the future of the UN and the use of technology in schools. They have developed their public speaking and reasoning skills as well as learning how to construct a convincing argument using a range of powerful rhetorical features.

Ethics Cup

A team of Year 10 students competed against Year 10-13 students from a number of schools and colleges across Leeds in the Ethics Cup competition at the University of Leeds. As well as engaging in ethical discussion on a range of contemporary issues chosen from a set of cases which students had studied; the team also enjoyed a campus tour and lunch in the university refectory. Although we did not progress to the semi finals, we enjoyed a fantastic day of debate and ethical discussion.

Leeds Salon

In January, we entered a team of Year 10 students in the Leeds Salon debating competition. They gave a good account of themselves in debates on mobile phone use in schools and the role of social media companies and governments in challenging misinformation online.
