Positive Transitions – Year 5 and 6

Positive Transitions – Year 5 and 6

Year 6 Familiarisation Day

In July, our new cohort of students had their Year 6 familiarisation day. They spent the day in school, getting to know their new tutor and the other members of their tutor groups. Where possible, these groups stay the same throughout students’ time at Cardinal Heenan and the friendships made during daily tutor time often endure long after students have left school. They also participated in PSHCE and RE lessons, focussed around the virtues and the ways these can be used to support students to become the people God calls them to be. They also had a tour of the school and treasure hunt, led by Year 10 student ambassadors. This gave new students the chance to ask any questions they had about the transition to high school. In many cases, students also had their first experience of catching the school bus or walking to school, setting them up for success in September. We look forward to welcoming them back into school in September!

Year 6 Enrolment Evening

Following on from their familiarisation day, Year 6 students and their families were invited to attend our Enrolment Evening, where they listened to presentations from the headteacher Mr Kelly and their Head of Year Mrs Hayden. They also had the chance to meet their Assistant Head of Year, Mrs Marshall, as well as their tutors. In addition, there was information available about Teaching and Learning at Cardinal Heenan and an introduction to some of the online systems used to record homework tasks. They were also able to find out more about the wide array of extra-curricular activities available in school and to get involved with the Common Good Project by making tissue paper flowers which will be used to decorate tables at our regular afternoon tea parties with Leeds Irish Health and Homes.

Year 5 taster days

In June, we welcomed Year 5 students from our feeder primary schools for taster days. These days give pupils the chance to see what life at high school is like, trying out a range of different subjects and getting the chance to explore our school in more depth. Students engaged in welcome activities and ice breakers, as well as English, Science, PE, RE and Technology lessons. They also had a tour of the school and a chance to speak to current Year 7 students about their experiences of moving to high school.
