Teacher of Science
Permanent role starting September 2025
Full Time
Scale: MPS/UPS

Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School is a happy and ambitious community where positive relationships, mutual respect, and high expectations underpin everything we do.  We challenge all members of our school to “be kind, try your best and follow the rules.”  Our students are our greatest asset – they regularly inspire and impress both staff and visitors.

We are proud of our academic success, with our 2024 GCSE results once again among the highest in Leeds, and we have recently been graded Outstanding in all areas by the Catholic School’s Inspectorate (May 2025).  These achievements reflect the hard work, collaboration, and dedication of both students and staff.  All curriculum areas are fully staffed with subject specialists, ensuring a consistent and high-quality educational experience.

The Governors are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, ambitious, and highly motivated Teacher of Science to join our high-performing department.  The successful candidate will join a collaborative team committed to delivering excellent science education across all year groups.  All science staff teach Key Stages 3 and 4 and are allocated their own specialist teaching rooms, with strong day-to-day support from our experienced team of Science Technicians.

In Years 7 and 8, students are taught general science by one teacher; from Year 9 onwards, subject specialists lead lessons in physics, chemistry, and biology wherever possible. An ability to teach physics and/or chemistry would be an advantage, though we are committed to appointing the best candidate for our school, regardless of specialism.

We welcome applications from both early career teachers and more experienced colleagues.  We offer comprehensive support at every career stage, including a well-structured CPD programme, a welcoming and supportive staffroom, and access to external courses through our strategic partnerships with the Leeds Teaching School, the Leeds Learning Partnership, and the Diocese of Leeds Catholic School networks—creating a progressive environment that supports personal and professional development at all stages.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is an excellent classroom practitioner who believes that all students can succeed.
  • Has a genuine passion for science and a desire to inspire and engage young people.
  • Thrives in a supportive and collaborative school culture.
  • Is ambitious for themselves and their students.
  • Is committed to contributing positively to the life of a happy and values-driven school.

 In return, we offer:

  • Motivated students who enjoy learning and are eager to succeed.
  • A supportive, friendly, and professional staff team.
  • Opportunities for continued professional development.
  • A rewarding and inclusive school community rooted in strong values.

While there is no requirement for staff to be practising Catholics, a willingness to support the Catholic ethos of the school is essential.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought, along with other relevant pre-employment checks, for the successful applicant.

We promote diversity and want a workforce which reflects the population of Leeds.
