Recently, our Year 9 students completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition. It was an unforgettable weekend that challenged us both physically and mentally, while giving us the chance to work together and create lasting memories. The expedition began with strong winds and heavy rain, making the first part of the walk even more demanding. Carrying heavy rucksacks over long distances certainly wasn’t easy, but every group supported one another and worked together to navigate the route.
By the end of the first day, everyone felt a real sense of achievement after reaching the campsite. Once our tents were up, it was time to cook dinner and relax. Many groups spent the evening playing Uno, enjoying a game of football or chatting together before heading to bed. Some students were having so much fun that teachers had to remind a few tents that it really was time to get some sleep!
After what felt like a very short night, everyone woke to the sound of the nearby river, which many of us had mistaken for heavy rain. Unfortunately, just as we started making breakfast and packing away our tents, the rain really did arrive. Trying to squeeze soaking wet tents back into their bags quickly became one of the biggest challenges of the weekend.
With the second day’s walk underway, tired legs began to take over, but spirits were lifted by the sight of the ice cream van at the second checkpoint. Knowing the finish was getting closer kept everyone motivated, and crossing the finish line together felt like a huge achievement. We finished the expedition with a team photograph to celebrate everything we had accomplished. Although the weekend pushed us out of our comfort zones, it also helped us become more resilient, independent and confident. We strengthened friendships, learnt valuable navigation and teamwork skills, and discovered that the challenge was far more rewarding than we had imagined. Looking back, completing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award is something we are all incredibly proud of.
